Ribozyme-based potential antibacterial strategy

Ribozymes can recognize and cleave specific sequences of RNA molecules. The catalytic nature of ribozymes has been investigated in the context of viral, cancer, and genetic diseases. However, in the literature, the use of ribozymes and mRNA cleavage against bacterial targets remains limited. The project aims to design a ribozyme that would efficiently cleave an mRNA transcript encoding an essential bacterial protein. Successful cleavage of mRNA and the absence of the protein should inhibit bacterial growth and lead to cell death.
